Bringing Climate Change through Geo Engineering: Is It Worth It?

Imagine tons of iron being dumped into the ocean... creating orbital mirrors that reflect the sun...or releasing reflective particles into the ocean and feeding bacteria with methane! The formerly mentioned ideas would probably bring drastic climate change globally. But are these ideas worthy?
Can they work?

Risk taking

Some critics are of the opinion that they can worsen our problems by doubling global warming and destroy the marine life. On the other hand, some organizations and countries have decided that this risk is worth taking. It seems there won't be restrictions to them or making sure that it is done rightly. A climate scientist from the National Center for Atmospheric Research has stated that “It's the Wild West Out There!” Moreover, if Geo Engineering is not supervised rightly by government authorities, it can create havoc and huge climate change risks. If not, fast melting polar ice, thawing of Siberian Permafrost, huge temperature changes etc. might not be too far.

Role of the government and Laws

As of now, there are no government bodies that have the right to decide whether such manipulations are beneficial for the earth, atmosphere and sea or not. According to 1988 Ocean Dumping Act by Environmental Protection Agency, iron dumping is illegal for the boasts registered as American. In the year 1977, an Environmental Modification Convention law was signed by the United Nations, which is the only law applicable to Geo Engineering. However the drawback is that it has been formed only for military weather control.

Experimenting with nature

Before a year or two, an authority from Moscow's Institute of Global Climate and Ecology had opined that the country should release some amount of Sulphur in the atmosphere so that it cools the Earth by some degrees. On the other hand, some scientists were of the opinion that it would destroy the agriculture up to a great extent.
Two companies based in San Francisco are planning to sell the carbon offset credits by scattering iron in the Pacific Ocean. According to the recent reports by Boston Globe, it has come out that several experiments that have been conducted in the last few years to check the plankton emission of greenhouse gases but none have been successful.

The pros and cons

Alan Robock, the climate scientist from Rutgers University, said that “Various experiments are being conducted in the atmosphere without keeping any model in mind. There arises a need to understand that the responses might not be in accordance with the working of the earth's systems.”

Some climatologists have opined that the climate change experiments might be successful for cooling the earth's temperature, but it will leave certain regions in a worse situation.

Who might be a winner in such cases? How can these issues be resolved? What if different countries choose different temperatures? Is Geo engineered world a better one as compared to the natural world?
